چکیده

A knot in S is doubly slice if it is the cross-section of an unknotted two-sphere in S. For low-crossing knots, the most complete work to date gives a classification of doubly slice knots through 9 crossings. We extend that work through 12 crossings, resolving all but four cases among the 2,977 prime knots in that range. The techniques involved in this analysis include considerations of the Alexander module and signature functions as well as calculations of the twisted Alexander polynomials for higher-order branched covers. We give explicit illustrations of the double slicing for each of the 20 knots shown to be smoothly doubly slice. We place the study of doubly slice knots in a larger context by introducing the double slice genus of a knot.

New Obstructions to Doubly Slicing Knots

A knot in the 3-sphere is called doubly slice if it is a slice of an unknotted 2-sphere in the 4-sphere. We give a bi-sequence of new obstructions for a knot being doubly slice. We construct it following the idea of Cochran-Orr-Teichner’s filtration of the classical knot concordance group. This yields a bi-filtration of the monoid of knots (under the connected sum operation) indexed by pairs of...

On smoothly superslice knots

We find smoothly slice (in fact doubly slice) knots in the 3-sphere with trivial Alexander polynomial that are not superslice, answering a question posed by Livingston and Meier.

The Granny and the Square Tangle and the Unknotting Number

We show that a knot with a diagram with n granny and square tangles has unknotting number at least n, bridge number > n, and braid index > n. As an application, we construct exponentially many in the crossing number slice knots with arbitrarily high unknotting number.

Algebraic and Heegaard-floer Invariants of Knots with Slice Bing Doubles

If the Bing double of a knot K is slice, then K is algebraically slice. In addition the Heegaard–Floer concordance invariants τ , developed by Ozsváth-Szabó, and δ, developed by Manolescu and Owens, vanish on K. For a knot K ⊂ S, the Bing double, denoted B(K), is the two component link illustrated schematically in Figure 1. Within the box the two strands run parallel along a diagram for K, and ...

Knot Floer Homology and the Four-ball Genus

We use the knot filtration on the Heegaard Floer complex ĈF to define an integer invariant τ(K) for knots. Like the classical signature, this invariant gives a homomorphism from the knot concordance group to Z. As such, it gives lower bounds for the slice genus (and hence also the unknotting number) of a knot; but unlike the signature, τ gives sharp bounds on the four-ball genera of torus knots...
